Alanna Gilchrist, Teacher
Alanna is an Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT) who works with the Toronto District School Board. She holds a Master of Arts in Child Study and Education from The University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Ontario College of Art and Design.
During her academic journey, Alanna gained invaluable experience by actively engaging with students who had diverse learning needs. Alanna firmly believes in the continuous growth and learning of educators, which has driven her to regularly partake in professional development opportunities in order to remain well-informed and aligned with the ever-evolving fields of contemporary teaching.
Currently, Alanna dedicates herself to shaping the educational landscape in Toronto by actively contributing as an Occasional Teacher in present-day classrooms, including those at Bloorview School Authority. In addition to her classroom work, she’s made impacts as a private tutor. Her expertise lies in fostering academic skills and enhancing executive functioning stratigies in her students.
Through these experiences, Alanna discovered a deep passion for working with individuals who require specialized support and care. Alanna identifies as an advocate in the realm of special education by consistently championing the rights of those who may not receive the support they deserve. Her commitment to the field of special education was demonstrated though her role as the co-president of OISE’s student chapter for The Council of Exceptional Children. In recognition of her contributions to the filled, Alanna was honoured with The Kingsley Award upon graduation.
Previous to her graduate studies, Alanna drew upon her artistic background working as an arts educator in various educational and charitable settings. In these roles, she engaged children with imaginative, authentic, and enriching learning experiences. A commitment to fostering creativity in education remains a cornerstone of Alanna’s teaching philosophy.
Beyond her professional endeavours, Alanna cherishes her personal hobbies. Her love for art continues to inspire her, she can often be found immersing herself in creative projects and crafting jewelry. She is happiest when spending quality time with her beloved dog, Ruby.
