What do DI sessions look like?
Direct Instruction sessions are one-on-one and highly personalized. Our approach with every student is relationship-based; we value getting to know each child and their family well. In most cases students will have two, hour-long sessions weekly and there is no formal homework between sessions. Having a structured and consistent schedule is important, so each student comes at their reserved times every week. Direct Instruction is only offered in English.
How do I know if DI is right for my child?
Families pursue DI for several reasons. These reasons include a child reading 2-3 years behind their grade level because of learning disability or children in trench Immersion are not yet reading in English. Other students have been lost in the education system, unable to have their learning needs met and are struggling across all areas of academics. The reasons for attending Direct Instruction vary from child to child.
How does DI differ from other tutoring?
DI is not traditional tutoring – we do not do school homework or help study for tests. While we don’t directly assist with schoolwork, we do practice valuable executive functioning and academic skills that support overall school success. We also make a point of talking about the ups and downs that happen throughout the school year with our students. We celebrate accomplishments and problem-solve when hard things come up. We strive to build a motivation to learn and an appreciation for school.
How do I sign my child up for DI sessions?
After we complete our intake call and determine that you are interested in moving forward with DI Sessions, we do two things: a) determine a weekly schedule, and b) arrange a Programming and Placement session for your child with one of our directors. This session is one-hour in length and is billed at the hourly rate of $250. After this session, one of the Directors will send you a summary outlining our suggested programming and next steps. It is preferable to begin as soon as possible.

Do parents usually stay during the session?
Parents do not stay during Direct Instruction sessions. However, we do like to show families the rooms we work in and the materials that we use. Siblings are also special to us. We love to develop relationships with our students’ brothers and sisters too!
How long does it take to improve?
Direct Instruction is not a quick fix. While families do report that they notice changes soon after starting, you can expect to commit to at least a year of sessions twice a week or the equivalent of 100 hours of instruction.
Why does it take so long?
Direct Instruction is built around the principle of ‘Mastery’ and we have very specific guidelines around advancing students. We adhere to these guidelines and the scaffolded curriculum to ensure that the students gain knowledge and skills that last.
Is it ok to take some days off?
It is ok to take a day off here and there, especially when it comes to things like birthday parties, school events or family/friend gatherings. These are important events!
What is the financial commitment?
The hourly rate for Direct Instruction is $142 and is inclusive of everything including your child’s programming and placement session, ongoing communication as needed, educational consultation and a virtual progress meetings every 10 weeks.
The hourly rate for Educational Consultation is $200 if you are not a family already receiving services.
If at any time you require a written report, there will be an additional charge depending on the type of report required.
What is the cancellation policy?
We ask that you cancel no later than 24 hours in advance. There are always exceptions, especially for illness and emergencies. If you do not show up for you session without notice, you will be charged the full rate.
How do I pay?
All of our payments are made by credit card and are processed through the system we use called OWL.
